Balance Cock

A single-footed bridge, screwed to the main plate, that carries the upper pivot bearing of the balance staff and, usually, the regulator index.

What it does

Supports the top pivot of the balance assembly and provides a mounting point for the regulator, while its removal allows the entire balance to be lifted out for servicing.

How it works

The balance cock is fixed to the plate by a single screw (or, in some earlier watches, secured by a separate cock-holding stud and screw), allowing it to be swung aside or lifted for access to the balance without disturbing other bridges.

It carries the upper balance jewel (or, in shock-protected movements, the upper shock-absorber unit), and typically also the regulator index and its curb pins, so that the whole timing-adjustment mechanism travels with the cock.

In decorative watchmaking, especially English and early Swiss work, the balance cock was a prominent surface for hand engraving, piercing and chasing, and its style is a useful aid to dating and attribution.

Evolution

From heavily decorated, individually hand-finished cocks in early and high-grade watchmaking to plainer, standardised cocks in mass-produced calibres, though decorative finishing persists in premium modern watchmaking.
