Jean Rousseau astronomical pocket watch

Partially verified

This pocket watch, attributed to Jean Rousseau (1606-1684) and dated circa 1660-1670, is a Genevan-made timepiece constructed from engraved silver and gilt brass. The case reverse is decorated with engraved oval vignettes depicting the Four Seasons within scrolling foliage, while the band features motifs representing the Four Elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. The gilt brass dial incorporates four distinct subsidiary dials with silver rings and apertures, displaying calendar information including month, days in the month, zodiac signs, date, moon phase, lunar age, and the time in hours, along with a weekday aperture. The top plate of the internal movement is signed 'Jean Rousseau'. The object was acquired by the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria and Albert Museum) in 1855 following the auction of the collection formerly belonging to Ralph Bernal, a politician and collector who amassed significant antiquities using wealth derived from enslaved labour in Jamaica.

Object description

Case and Exterior Decoration

The watch is housed in an engraved silver case. The reverse side features oval vignettes illustrating the Four Seasons, framed by detailed scrolling foliage.

The outer band of the case is decorated with additional vignettes, which represent the Four Elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water, indicating the thematic focus of the exterior design.

  • “Around the band are vignettes representing the Four Elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water.”

Dial and Astronomical Indicators

The dial is made of gilt brass and features four subsidiary dials. These dials utilize silver rings and apertures to display temporal and astronomical information.

The top dial indicates the month, number of days, and zodiac symbol, while the left dial tracks the date. The right dial displays moon phase and lunar age, and the bottom dial shows the hours and a weekday aperture.

  • “The top aperture shows the name of the month, the number of days in the month, and the zodian symbol. The left dial shows the date. The right dial shows the age and the phase of the moon.”

Provenance and History

The watch originated in the collection of Ralph Bernal (1783-1854), a British politician who was a prominent collector of art and antiquities. Upon his death, his collection was auctioned.

The Museum of Ornamental Art (later the V&A) purchased 730 lots from this auction. Bernal’s ability to build his collection was linked to the income derived from enslaved labour on his plantations in Jamaica.

Evidence for this section
  • “Purchased at the auction by Christie's of the collection of Ralph Bernal (1783-1854), politician and art collector, in 1855.”
  • “730 lots were acquired for Marlborough House (Anthony Burton, Vision & Accident, V&A Publications, 1999, p. 34).”
  • “Yet the main source of income which enabled him to do this was the profits from enslaved labour.”

Open research questions

  • What is the specific mechanical arrangement of the calendar and astronomical complications within the movement?
  • Does the signature 'Jean Rousseau' imply his personal involvement in the execution of the astronomical dial or solely the movement's basic assembly?
