Life & work

Robert Molyneux was a skilled English horologist who completed an apprenticeship under the renowned Thomas Earnshaw, inheriting many of his master's technical approaches.

He initially established a workshop at 44 Devonshire Street, often collaborating with fellow apprentice Charles John Cope. The business later expanded into a family enterprise when he moved to 30 Southampton Row and brought his sons, Henry and Robert Jr., into the firm as Molyneux & Sons. Throughout his career, Molyneux contributed significant advancements to maritime navigation, most notably by developing a chronometer-thermometer and a patented auxiliary compensation balance in 1840.

The high regard for his instruments is evidenced by their use on notable naval expeditions, such as the 1821 Parry and Lyon voyage to the Arctic.
