Adolphe Nicole was a Swiss-born watchmaker who worked in London and is credited with foundational patents in chronograph mechanism design during the 1840s–1860s, notably an 1862 patent (with Jules Capt) for a mechanism enabling the chronograph function to return to zero — the reset-to-zero mechanism that remains central to chronograph design.
Nicole's chronograph patents were licensed to and used by a number of Swiss and English watch and movement manufacturers, giving his work an outsized influence on the later mass adoption of the chronograph complication despite Nicole himself not becoming a large-scale manufacturer under his own name.
