Historical significance

  • The ebonised wood case, glazed on all four sides, is surmounted by a large bronze handle.
  • The brass dial, decorated with gilded and chased appliques, indicates the hours and minutes, engraved on a pewter chapter ring. Two apertures in the central section show a small pendulum at the top, visible through an oblong opening, and the date at the bottom.
  • The movement, with a back plate entirely engraved with floral and scroll motifs, has two fusees fitted with gut cords (going and striking mechanisms), a verge escapement, and a striking mechanism for the hours and quarters with a six-bell carillon.
