Historical significance

  • The border of the gilded brass case is pierced and engraved with scrollwork, in which two dogs and two rabbits depicted running. The back and bezel are plain silver.
  • The dial has a silver chapter ring engraved with Roman numerals from I to XII, each separated by a fleuron. The exterior of the gilded brass dial plate is engraved with inhabited scrollwork in the style of Delaune’s models. The centre of the dial is engraved with a landscape showing a walled town. The hand is in gilded brass.
  • The movement, which strikes the hours in passing, has a fusee with gut cord, a verge escapement, and an annular balance. The four square section gilded brass pillars are engraved. The striking barrel, balance cock, locking-plate bridge and click are all engraved and pierced with scrollwork, animals and strawberry flowers.
