The five-lobed case is fashioned out of a block of rock crystal

The silver dial, which can be seen through the rock crystal cover, shows the hours in Roman numerals from I to XII. It is decorated with an engraved landscape and features a translucent green enamelled hand shaped like a salamander. The gilded brass false plate, shaped so that it marries with the shape of the case, is finely engraved with scrollwork, among which there are two cherubs, armour and a shield.

Historical significance

  • The silver dial, which can be seen through the rock crystal cover, shows the hours in Roman numerals from I to XII. It is decorated with an engraved landscape and features a translucent green enamelled hand shaped like a salamander. The gilded brass false plate, shaped so that it marries with the shape of the case, is finely engraved with scrollwork, among which there are two cherubs, armour and a shield.
  • The movement, with its fluted baluster pillars, can be admired through the transparent dome. It has a fusee with gut cord, a verge escapement and an annular balance. The balance is protected by a single-footed balance cock which, like the click, is pierced and engraved.
