Historical significance

  • The case-back, which was engraved by Jules-Louis Jacot (1826-1872), depicts the sinking of the French vessel Le Vengeur du Peuple by the English on 1 June 1794.
  • The white enamel dial has painted Roman numerals for the hours. The blued steel hour and minute hands have gilded fleur-de-lis tips.
  • The movement, with hour and half-hour passing strike (clock watch), has a lever escapement with visible pallets, a compensation balance, and a flat steel balance spring. The balance cock is fitted with an anti-shock device (parachute) and an index with a bimetallic (steel and brass) compensation curb.
  • Born in Le Locle in 1826, Jules-Louis Jacot also engraved the back of another MIH watch (inv. I-171) with a scene taken from Léopold Robert’s painting, The Arrival of the Reapers in the Pontine Marshes.
