The centre of the case-back is decorated with a painted enamel medallion showing the Strait of Bosphorus and Constantinople at twilight. Fine lines engraved on gold, visible through the translucent enamel of the sky, represent the rays of the setting sun. The medallion is surrounded by four lobes with enamelled garlands of flowers on a turquoise ground alternating with four red enamel cartouches. The rest of the case, as well as the dome, pendant and bow, is decorated with engraved leaves.

Historical significance

  • The centre of the case-back is decorated with a painted enamel medallion showing the Strait of Bosphorus and Constantinople at twilight. Fine lines engraved on gold, visible through the translucent enamel of the sky, represent the rays of the setting sun. The medallion is surrounded by four lobes with enamelled garlands of flowers on a turquoise ground alternating with four red enamel cartouches. The rest of the case, as well as the dome, pendant and bow, is decorated with engraved leaves.
  • The white enamel dial has gold coloured Turkish numerals and its centre is decorated with three bouquets of flowers painted on enamel. The hour and minute hands are blued steel.
  • The gilded brass movement has hour and quarter repeating on gongs and a cylinder escapement.
