Historical significance

  • The back of the case depicts a smithy: two blacksmiths, one working the bellows, the other striking on the anvil, stand out in the foreground against a painted enamel backdrop. The sails of a windmill turn above them, while water flows into a fountain on the right.
  • The white enamel dial has painted Arabic numerals for the hours. The gilded brass hour and minute hands have pierced tips.
  • The movement is fitted with a going barrel and cylinder escapement. The train activating the automata can be started and stopped by a small lever on the side of the case.
