Historical significance

  • Round watch with carillon, Movement signed: Jaquet-Droz London, hallmarked on the plate and under the enamel backing of the dial. Part of the Sarazin-Von der Mühll collection. Circa 1780.
  • The gold case is decorated with an enamel painting, on a translucent enamel ground, depicting a fountain with a column on each side surmounted by a vase of flowers. The impression of relief is produced by the use of different coloured gold paillons and by a layer of transparent enamel covering the whole ground.
  • The engraved gold double back is pierced so that the carillon can be heard. The two bezels are decorated with floral motifs, also painted on enamel.
  • The white enamel dial has painted Roman numerals for the hours. The hour and minute hands are made of finely pierced gold. The centre-seconds hand, also in gold, is fitted between the other two hands.
  • The gilded brass movement has a cylinder escapement. The five-bell carillon mechanism is activated by pushing on an engraved gold pendant.
