Background
The Special Railway grade was a series of pocket watch movements manufactured by the Hampden Watch Company as part of their railroad-oriented product lines. The 18-size, 17-jewel Special Railway was part of the new line of 17-jewel watches that Hampden promoted in an advertising campaign begun in 1891. According to RailsWest, Hampden was the first maker to mass-produce and heavily promote 17-jewel watches, at a time when most high-grade watches had 15 jewels.
Refinements followed, including the introduction of 23-jewel and 21-jewel variants in the late 1890s and early 1900s. Manufacturing of these movements continued into the early 20th century, with a 16-size model 5 version introduced around 1920.
