Background
Swiss firms produced these timepieces for the Chinese market during the 19th century, with Fleurier in the Val-de-Travers becoming a centre for their manufacture. Edouard Bovet, who arrived in Canton in 1818, founded a trading company in 1822 that established his name as synonymous with these watches in China. These watches often featured high-quality movements and lavishly decorated cases with enamel miniatures, cloisonné, champlevé, and pearl-set borders.
Bovet specialized in engraving and skeletonizing his movements, which helped broaden the appeal of these timepieces to his Mandarin customers. According to Christie's, such watches were sometimes used as a medium of exchange in late Manchu China.
