Glashütte Original

Partially verified

Luxury mechanical watches with proprietary in-house movements

History

The company was founded in 1994 after Heinz W. Pfeifer acquired the state-run VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB).

This entity had been formed in 1951 through the forced collectivization of seven horological companies based in Glashütte. The brand name was adopted as a historical reference to the practice of Glashütte watchmakers signing their work to distinguish it from inferior imitations. In 2000, the company was acquired by the Swatch Group, which remains its parent organization.

The company maintains the Alfred Helwig School of Watchmaking to train future generations of craftsmen.
