Pair case

An inner case holding the movement within a separate outer protective case.

Explanation

Standard on English verge watches into the nineteenth century, the outer case protected the inner from dust and wear in the pocket. Original pairs with matching marks and numbers are far scarcer than the surviving quantity of single cases suggests.
