Hallmarks

Assay office marks certifying precious-metal content, often datable to a year.

Explanation

British hallmarks comprise a standard mark, town mark, date letter and maker's mark, allowing a case to be dated precisely. The hallmark dates the case only — movements were frequently cased later or re-cased entirely.
