Ébauche

An unfinished rough movement, complete in layout but lacking escapement finishing, jewelling, decoration or a signature.

Explanation

Ébauche manufacture was central to the Swiss établissage system; the same basic ébauche could be finished to widely differing grades and sold under many different names.
