Bluing

Heat-tempering steel parts to a deep blue for hardness control and decoration.

Explanation

Screws, hands and springs are polished bright then heated evenly, often on a brass pan or heat block, until the oxide layer passes through straw, purple and finally a rich blue. Beyond appearance, correct bluing sets the temper of the steel.
