Spring Bar
VerifiedA small spring-loaded rod, telescoping under internal spring pressure, used to attach a strap or bracelet to the lugs of a wristwatch case.
What it does
Holds the strap or bracelet securely to the case while allowing it to be removed and refitted by compressing the bar's spring-loaded ends inward, clear of the lug holes.
How it works
The bar consists of a tube containing a compressed spring, with a small pin protruding from each end; a spring-bar tool depresses these pins, shortening the bar enough to clear the lug holes for removal or fitting.
Once released between the lug holes, the spring pushes the pins back out into the holes, seating the bar (and with it the strap or bracelet end) securely in place.
Some cases use drilled lugs, allowing a spring-bar tool to be inserted from the side without removing the strap entirely, easing strap changes without scratching the case.
Evolution
Spring bars became standard with the shift from pocket to wrist wear, replacing wire lugs and fixed strap attachments used on some of the earliest wristwatch conversions.
