Safety Roller
VerifiedA small disc, distinct from the main roller table, mounted lower on the balance staff in a double-roller escapement, engaged by the pallet fork's guard pin for shock safety.
What it does
Works with the guard pin to prevent the pallet fork from swinging into the path of the balance roller when the escapement is unlocked, protecting against tripping under shock.
How it works
Separating the safety function onto its own smaller disc, rather than combining it with the impulse-jewel table as in a single-roller design, allows the impulse roller to be made more robust and the safety clearance to be set more precisely.
The safety roller's edge is cut with a small crescent-shaped recess; the guard pin can only pass into this recess when the roller (and hence the balance) is correctly positioned relative to the fork, blocking the fork's swing at any other position.
Evolution
Double-roller designs with a dedicated safety roller became the standard in higher-grade lever escapements over the older single-roller arrangement.
