Background

Weight-driven mechanical clocks emerged in medieval Europe following the development of the bell-striking alarm used to signal the time for monastic bells. These devices were constructed as a synthesis of prior scientific ideas and functioned through the controlled action of a verge and foliot mechanism.

An early example of this design was built by Henry de Vick around 1360, establishing a fundamental model that remained in use for approximately three centuries. Although weights were essential to these early mechanical systems, the later invention of the mainspring in the 15th century enabled the creation of smaller clocks.

Condition and survival

Few examples of the original verge and foliot mechanisms have survived to the present day due to the superior accuracy of later pendulum clocks.
