Angelus Alarm Clock and Weather Station, Retailed by Tiffany & Co.

Partially verified

This circa 1950s gilt brass desk triptych by Angelus was retailed by Tiffany & Co., featuring a central manual-wind clock flanked by integrated weather instruments. The square silvered central dial displays hours, minutes, and alarm indicators along with day, month, date, and moon phase complications. To the left, an aneroid barometer provides atmospheric pressure readings, while the right instrument houses a thermometer with concentric scales in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. The three framed sections are arranged in an arc upon an integrated curved plinth.

Object description

Construction and Configuration

This desk weather station features a three-panel design composed of gilt brass, arranged in an arc and mounted on a curved plinth. The central panel houses a silvered clock dial, while the left panel contains a barometer and the right panel contains a thermometer.

The thermometer dial features concentric scales for Celsius and Fahrenheit measurements, with blue steel indicator hands.

Evidence for this section
  • “Three-panel curved gilt brass case standing on a matching curved base plinth.”
  • “Left panel houses a barometer dial and right panel houses a Celsius and Fahrenheit thermometer dial with blue steel indicator hands.”
  • “CASE MATERIAL: Gilt brass”

Dial and Condition

The central silvered dial displays the time and incorporates apertures for day, month, and moon phase, along with a date track. Condition reports note scratches near the base of the hands and corrosion around the dial edges.

The hands appear to have been relumed, and the case exhibits scratches.

Evidence for this section
  • “Central clock dial with day and month apertures, lower calendar track, and a moon phase aperture below 12 o'clock.”
  • “The case is in good condition with scratches.”
  • “The central dial has some scratches near the base of the hands. The central dial has some corrosion around the edges. The hands appear to be relumed.”

Mechanical Status

Functionality of the integrated instruments and clock movement is reported as inconsistent. The day, date, and alarm functions were operational at the time of cataloging, as was the thermometer.

The barometer was noted as not working at the time of cataloging. Regarding the clock movement, the source states both that it is 'not working' and that it is 'in working order,' though it has not been tested for accuracy.

Evidence for this section
  • “The day and date change functions are working at the time of cataloguing. The alarm function is working at the time of cataloguing.”
  • “The barometer does not appear to be working at the time of cataloguing.”
  • “The thermometer appears to be working at the time of cataloguing.”
  • “The clock is not working at the time of cataloguing. The movement is in working order at the time of cataloging, consistent with the age of the watch.”

Open research questions

  • Clarify the nature of the contradictory status regarding the movement's functionality.
  • Verify if internal movement components or setting mechanisms require specific maintenance beyond the recommended service.
