Life & work
Victor Kullberg was a Swedish-born chronometer maker who settled in London and became one of the most prolific and highly regarded chronometer manufacturers of the Victorian era, establishing a workshop that supplied finished chronometers both under his own name and, in large numbers, to the trade for retailing by other firms, a common practice in the London chronometer trade of the period.
Kullberg chronometers achieved consistently strong results in the Greenwich Observatory trials that were used to rate and compare English chronometer makers' output through the nineteenth century, and his firm's reputation for careful workmanship placed him among the top rank of London-based chronometer houses alongside makers such as Charles Frodsham and Thomas Mercer, even though, as a foreign-born maker, he stood somewhat apart from the older established English chronometer dynasties.
After Kullberg's death the business continued under his successors into the twentieth century, maintaining the family name on chronometers produced for continued naval and merchant marine service; detailed personal biographical material on Kullberg himself, as opposed to his firm's output and trial results, is comparatively limited in general reference literature.
