D. Edmonds

Partially verified

Liverpool maker of verge pocket watches

Life & work

D. Edmonds was a Liverpool watchmaker of the late eighteenth century; the Metropolitan Museum of Art records him as active from 1787 to 1810.

The Met holds a silver watch by him, 5.7 cm in diameter, given by Joseph W. Drexel in 1889. Contributors to the NAWCC message board, citing Baillie's and Dr Kemp's listings, give his Liverpool working period as 1787 to 1810; Kemp records nine watches or movements attributed to him in the Liverpool Museum, hallmarked between 1775 and 1804 and all with verge escapements. Surviving examples are verge fusee watches in silver pair cases; one sold by the dealer Cogs & Pieces, signed and numbered 912, has London hallmarks for 1778.

Forum contributors also report Edmonds movements in Coventry-made pair cases hallmarked as late as 1818–19, and one concluded that Edmonds worked in Liverpool from about 1775 to about 1820.
