Abraham-Louis Perrelet was a watchmaker of Le Locle, in the Neuchâtel Jura, traditionally credited with an early self-winding ('automatic') watch mechanism using an oscillating weight, reportedly demonstrated to the Société des Arts in Geneva around 1777. He worked within the broader Jura tradition of watchmaking that fed the Geneva trade and later became the basis of the Swiss industry.
The precise mechanical detail and originality of Perrelet's self-winding device relative to other contemporary experiments is not fully settled in the secondary literature available; some historians credit him as the pioneer of the automatic watch, while acknowledging that Abraham-Louis Breguet's later 'perpétuelle' watches, built on similar oscillating-weight principles, are far better documented as surviving objects.
Perrelet's descendants continued in watchmaking, and the Perrelet name was later revived as a Swiss watch brand in the twentieth century; as with Breguet, this encyclopedia treats the historical individual and the modern commercial brand using his name as related but distinct subjects.
