Pocket-watch ancestry

The separated-dial layout was developed for precision regulator clocks and regulator pocket watches, used by watch- and clockmakers as a reference standard because the distinct sub-dials could be read at a glance without the hands overlapping or obscuring one another; wristwatch makers revived the layout decades later purely as a historical design reference.
