Dive Watches
VerifiedWatches engineered and tested for underwater use, characterised by gasketed water-resistant cases, unidirectional rotating timing bezels and high dial legibility.
Movement & mechanism
- Screw-down crown and case back with gaskets for water resistance
- Unidirectional rotating bezel to time elapsed dive duration safely (it can only shorten indicated remaining air time if bumped)
- Often shock-resistant automatic movements
Identification
- Rotating bezel with a luminous marker at zero
- Screw-down crown, sometimes with crown guards
- Rated water-resistance depth marked on the dial or case back
Terminology
- ISO 6425 — the international standard defining minimum diver's watch requirements
- Helium escape valve — a case valve used on some watches for saturation diving
Known variations
- Standard dive watch
- Saturation/helium-valve dive watch
Pocket-watch ancestry
Dive watches have essentially no pocket watch ancestry in form or function, since sealed case engineering for underwater use had no pocket-watch equivalent; their movements, however, remain the same mechanical lever-escapement lineage used throughout wristwatch history.
Collecting notes
A large modern collecting category; unlike most families here it postdates the pocket-to-wrist transition entirely, and its interest centres on tool-watch engineering rather than movement heritage.
