Construction and interpretation

The half-hunter, also called a demi-hunter, retains a protective front lid but provides a central aperture through which the hands can be seen. A chapter ring on the outside of the lid permits a reading without opening it. The aperture may be glazed; its construction and condition should be recorded rather than inferred from the name. This is a variation in case design, not a special going train or escapement.

A useful description explains how the hands relate to the outer numerals and whether the window gives a clear reading. Photograph both the closed lid and the unobstructed dial when this can be done safely: the two views document different features. The outer ring, inner dial and hands should be compared for style and fit, but a mismatch requires further evidence before it is called a later alteration. The visibility of the time is the practical distinction from a full hunter.
