Historical origin
A practical addition wherever a 12-hour dial could otherwise be ambiguous about which half of the day it represents, particularly relevant to complications like GMT/dual-time and alarm functions where an unambiguous AM/PM reading matters; used in both clocks and watches from at least the nineteenth century onward.
How it works
A disc, geared to complete one full revolution every 24 hours (as opposed to the twice-daily revolution of a conventional 12-hour hour hand), is shaded or printed to show a day half and a night half, with a small aperture in the dial revealing only the currently relevant portion.
Because the disc turns at half the rate of the 24-hour hand it is typically linked to (in a GMT or world-time context) or at the same rate as a dedicated 24-hour wheel, the day/night indicator unambiguously resolves the AM/PM question that a standard 12-hour dial alone cannot answer.
In simpler implementations, the day/night function is a secondary output of the alarm-setting or GMT mechanism rather than a wholly separate module, sharing the same 24-hour wheel already present for that complication.

Servicing notes
