Object description

Case Construction and Exterior Housing

The clock is housed in an oak case reported to be early 20th century and measuring 127 cm in height. The front door is glazed and hinged to open.

Observation of the open case reveals that the door rebate is lined with green baize or felt. As photographed, the front door is swung wide open, exposing the interior mounting and backboard fittings.

Evidence for this section
  • “AN EARLY 20TH CENTURY OAK CASED SYNCHRONOME ELECTRIC MASTER CLOCK”
  • “(127cm high)”
  • “Oak case with green baize or felt rebate lining the door opening.”

Electro-Mechanical Assembly and Wiring

Inside the case, a black-painted cast-metal A-frame plate is mounted to the backboard, holding electro-mechanical switchgear, coils, and terminal posts. A secondary electrical relay or coil assembly is positioned on the backboard directly below the primary frame.

The interior contains a wire harness secured by retainers along the inner right flank of the case. Along the upper inner left wall, three cylindrical wire-wound components are arranged vertically.

Evidence for this section
  • “Black painted cast-metal A-frame mounting plate holding electro-mechanical switchgear, coils, and terminal posts.”
  • “Additional electrical relay or coil assembly mounted below the main cast frame on the backboard.”
  • “Wire harness clipped along the inside right edge of the case.”
  • “Three cylindrical wire-wound components mounted vertically along the inner left wall.”

Dial and Mechanism Reports

The auction catalogue describes the front glazed door as enclosing a 6.5-inch silvered dial with Roman numerals, fronting an electric magnetic movement operating with a steel rod pendulum and a heavy cylindrical bob.

In the primary reference photograph, the front door is open, displaying the rear casing of the dial and movement mechanism mounted to the door frame. The dial face itself, the pendulum rod, and the cylindrical bob are not visible in the provided image.

Evidence for this section
  • “the glazed front door enclosing a 6.5" silvered dial with Roman numerals fronting an electric magnetic movement with steel rod pendulum and heavy cylindrical bob.”
  • “Glazed front door swung open, showing the rear casing of the dial and its movement mechanism.”
  • “Pendulum rod and bob are absent from the interior in this view.”

Open research questions

  • Are the steel rod pendulum and cylindrical bob preserved separately with the lot, and what are their physical dimensions?
  • Are there specific serial, model, or patent stamps present on the cast A-frame or movement casing?
  • What specific functions do the three wire-wound cylindrical coils along the upper left interior wall serve in this circuit configuration?
