Movement and Mechanism
The Atmos clock operates using a specialized mechanical movement driven by a hermetically sealed capsule containing a mixture of gas and liquid. This capsule expands or contracts with the slightest changes in atmospheric pressure and temperature, winding the mainspring automatically. The movement relies on a torsion pendulum, which oscillates at a slow rate to conserve the limited energy generated by the barometric system.
Because this system is extremely precise and sensitive to environmental contaminants, the entire movement is contained within a rigid glass and brass housing. The absence of a seconds hand is a design feature intended to reduce the energy load on the movement, thereby maintaining the stability of the timekeeping function. Various calibers have been used in the Atmos series, including the 528-8 identified here.
